Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile: Chainbreaker

It's now time for this month's Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile, our second-last monthly feature post of the month! As usual, this monthly feature series looks at a metal or hard rock band that, though not based locally, has a Sault Ste. Marie area native in any of their lineups from the past or present, so that local readers and fans can learn more about them and check them out! This month's selection is very new, but with an EP already out, I thought it'd be a good time to tackle them, so read on below for this month's profile! (Updated on November 27th)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chainbreaker (Toronto, Ontario)

Lineup: (Saultites in RED; ex-members in italics. This information is incomplete. E-mail me at robertfigures@outlook.com if you have any additions or corrections!)

Rob Ouellette (vocals)
Ian "Chains" Kilpatrick (guitar)
Curtis Faux (bass)
Al "Artillery" Biddle (drums)

Local Info: Bassist Curtis Faux is bound to be a familiar sight for many local metal & punk fans from both past local bands and his more recent Toronto work, joining the two in the inactive hardcore punk quartet Detroit in the late 2000s! Curtis and Detroit frontman/fellow Saultite Brenton Ellis have been longtime bandmates as well, joining forces in projects like The Labour Of..., The Sexual Vigilantes, and (most recently) cult Toronto favourites Maximum RNR, while you may also recognize Curt from a long stint as a guitarist with Toronto stoner rockers Sin Dealer, and currently with the garage rock outfit The Cola Heads. When not playing live with Maximum RNR, look for Curtis' newest project Chainbreaker in Southern Ontario!

Band Bio: Formed late last year, Chainbreaker united members of prominent Toronto bands like Maximum RNR, Cauldron, and Burn To Black into a new speed/thrash metal quartet, with the new band quickly releasing their debut EP "Constant Graving" on cassette and digitally last month. Chainbreaker made their live public debut on January 4th at the Izakaya Sushi House, later opening for guitarist Ian Chains' other band Cauldron last Friday at Sneaky Dees, and playing shows alongside bands like IDNS and Bat throughout 2014. More dates and material are sure to be in the pipeline, so be on the lookout! I don't usually feature such a new band in this series, but after playing live and releasing an EP already, I couldn't pass up the chance, so what can you expect from Chainbreaker? A blistering thrash attack, and if they keep on the same path as on "Constant Graving", they'll be a band to watch in the mid-2010s! Solid heavy groove and nice production abound on their studio tracks, Rob Ouellette's vocals (which sound punk influenced) suit the material, and Curtis' bass work compliments everything pretty well!

It'll be interesting to see how far Chainbreaker go (and if they come up here for a show), but check out their studio material and EP at the above links, and there is one live video of theirs on YouTube from their second show! Shaky camera, but it's effective to capture their sound, so check it out below!

I hope you guys liked this month's Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile! Next month in this series, we'll be looking at The Howling Bullets, the Toronto horror hard rock band featuring Sault native Dan Gingras (a.k.a. Dano Villano) on lead vocals & guitar, and some of you may recognize him as Frightlight bassist Mike "Eddie Fright" Gingras' brother! Watch out for that on or around March 26th, and stay tuned for weekend concert previews and this month's CD review soon! Thanks everyone!

Actually, Dano of the Howling Bullets plays bass and sings lead. There are two bass players in that band.
